Exciting news: we are getting Playaways in the Teen Room! They’re basically digital audiobooks, so they look kind of like MP3 players and are just as portable. Don’t have headphones? No worries–we’ll be selling earbuds for $1. Keep your eyes peeled for a list of Playaways titles, which I’ll post once we get them in.
In case you missed out, the Harry Potter Party was a blast! Check out the pictures on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/codylibrary
It’s not too late to sign up for our summer reading program. Join the nearly 100 teens already reading and doing activities, and you’ll have a shot at winning one of our many, many prizes
Here are some books you might want to start with:
Big Mouth and Ugly Girl
Joyce Carol Oates
Matt Donaghy didn’t mean to get into trouble. He was only cracking jokes, but someone overheard him, and that someone didn’t believe that he was kidding when he fake-threatened to shoot up his high school. Now the police have taken him, his friends have turned on him, and his family doesn’t know what or who to believe. Luckily for Matt, Ursula Riggs knows the truth. Will she stand up for him, and will it make a difference?
Gingerbread
Rachel Cohn
Cyd Charisse, aka “The Little Hellion,” hangs out on the beach with gorgeous painter-surfer-boyfriend Shrimp and drinks espresso at Java the Hut, a cafe owned by Shrimp’s equally intriguing brother Wallace. She’s only happy when she’s away from her way-too-snooty rich home, where her younger half-siblings crawl all over her and she and her mother compete in screaming matches. When she’s given a chance to visit her biological father in New York, though, she’s surprised to find out what “family” can mean.
The Astonishing Life Of Octavian Nothing, Traitor To The Nation
M.T. Anderson
This is not your typical “historical fiction” novel. While it takes place during the prelude to the American Revolutionary War, it is an exploration of slavery and betrayal that pulls no punches and feels painfully relevant to the modern world. Octavian is a young boy being raised in what seems to be a school, but why are they collecting so much information about him? Why is his mother not allowed to make any decisions about his upbringing? Find out the chilling truth.
House of the Scorpion
Nancy Farmer
Matteo believes that he is special to El Patron, the crime lord who rules over the country of Opium. Most other people see him as an animal, though, because Matteo is a clone who belongs to El Patron’s family, the House of the Scorpion. When kindly caretakers help Matteo realize the horrible future that has been planned for him, he decides that he must escape. The question is, How?
The Hunger Games
Suzanne Collins
In the country of Panem, which was once North America, the Capitol demands that the poorer Districts send two teenagers per year to compete in the annual Hunger Games. The teens must then fight to the death by any means necessary, and only one is allowed to survive. Hunger Games competitor Katniss takes her younger sister’s place, but is shocked to learn that the other sacrifice from her district is one of her only friends. Will she spare him, or will she save herself?
