Twilight / New Moon Contest!

6 11 2009

Attention Twilight fans: do you write fanfic? Do you draw fanart? Now you can do these things and win fabulous prizes!

The Teen Room is having a Twilight fanfic and fanart contest in honor of the New Moon movie release later this month. Here are the rules:

FICTION:
There is no minimum length for your story (or poem!), but please don’t submit more than ten pages.

ART:
Any medium is okay as long as your work can be transported to and stored in the Teen Room without difficulty for either of us.

BOTH:
Please keep it PG-13 or below.  If it’s too racy/has language too obscene to show your teachers, tame it down for your librarian.

You must fill out and sign our entry form. It will be up on the website early next week, or you can pick one up at the library starting today.

Looking forward to reading your stories and seeing your art! Good luck :D

TAG!

13 10 2009

Our next TAG meeting will be Thursday, October 22nd at 4pm. We’ll finalize the details for the Halloween party, and talk about whatever’s on your mind. Join us, and bring friends!

You Talk, We Listen

25 08 2009

Well, we’ve been staffing the Teen Room for nearly three full months now. We’ve had a blast working with you, and we’ve gotten lots of useful feedback. One thing we heard early and often was that you wanted all middle schoolers to be able to use the Teen Room, not just eighth graders.

Good news, sixth and seventh graders: you can now officially hang out in the Teen Room! That’s right. Try out the comfy bean bag chairs. Play chess. Zip around the “Mario Kart” track on Fridays, when the Wii is available. You belong here!

Older teens, you are not forgotten. Not by a long shot. We’re planning an open mic for you to play at, so stay tuned for an exact date, or drop us a line and help us plan. Also, we can help you with homework, college applications, or finding scholarships. Come by anytime that your librarian is here:

M-Th 11am-8pm
F 8:30am-5:30pm
… and some Saturdays, including this one (August 29th).

Wishing everyone the best for the new school year. Hope to see you soon!

Vampires, candy, and manga…

18 08 2009

… Just some of the things you can find in our new books! Here are write-ups of a few of our many, many recent buys. Come in and take a look at what we’ve got for you.

Guinea Pig Scientists
Leslie Dendy
What happens to the human body when deprived of sunlight? How does radium exposure affect cell growth? What’s the hottest temperature that a human being can survive in? Scientists have found the answer to these questions, and they did it by using themselves as the test subjects. Discover the crazy things that scientists will subject themselves to, all in the name of learning.

Candyfreak: A Journey Through The Chocolate Underbelly Of America
Steve Almond
If you’ve ever enjoyed a candy bar, take a look at this close-up of American candies. Steve Almond is, as you might have guessed from the title, obsessed with the candy that we know and love. He’s a funny, smart guide across one of this nation’s most delicious industries.

Pepperland
Mark Delaney
When sixteen year old Star’s mother dies, nothing can make her feel okay. Then she finds an unsent letter from her mother to John Lennon, the Beatles’ music, and her own ability to play the guitar. To Star’s surprise, things begin to improve…

Eighth Grade Bites
Heather Brewer
Vladimir Tod hates the eighth grade. The school staff don’t get him, he can’t get the interest of the girl he’s crushing on, and–oh yeah–he’s half-vampire. On top of everything else, he has to figure out how to live in a world of “normal” people without anyone to guide him. If you’re into vampire fiction, you might enjoy this series.

Fullmetal Alchemist
Hiromu Arawaka
Brothers Edward and Alphonse became alchemists so that they could bring their mother back from the dead. Unfortunately, their attempt failed, and it ruined their bodies in the process. Now they will stop at nothing to find the Philosopher’s Stone that can restore them to health and reunite them with their mom. This manga is part of a popular series. If you’re a manga fan, let me know which other series you’d like to see here as well!

Summer Reading Party!

6 08 2009

Summer’s ending, school’s starting, and we are getting one last party in before it does. Join us tomorrow (Friday, August 7th) from 11am to 2pm. We’ll be outside next to the Kids’ Department, but I promise we’ll bring all the Teen Room cool with us ; ) Bring a lunch to go with the juice and cookies we’ll provide, and if you did even one challenge this summer, prepare to pick up a prize.

Even if you didn’t do the summer reading program (sadness), there’s plenty of reasons to come into the library. We’ve gotten WiiSports, and lots of brand-new books just came in. We now have manga like Fullmetal Alchemist, plus the Mortal Instruments books and the Blue Bloods novels and more.

Hope to see you soon!

Books We Have That You Might Love

27 07 2009

Jellicoe Road
Melinda Marchetta
Trust this book. When you start reading it, it’s easy to get confused about which characters are which, and which storylines are going where. Stick with it: your patience will be rewarded. Jellicoe Road follows the story of Taylor Markham, a high school girl living in Australia who has been chosen to lead the annual war between the school, the Townies, and the Cadets. The problem is, she doesn’t want the job. She does, however, want to know why her mother abandoned her, why her caretaker Hannah is suddenly missing, and why she still finds Cadet leader Jonah Griggs so fascinating when he has betrayed her in the past. Follow Taylor’s quest for answers as she simultaneously wages war on the people around her, and on their silence about her past.

Saint Iggy
K.L. Going
“I am not so bad a person once you get to know me,” says Iggy Corso, but no one bothers to get to know him. Iggy means well, but everything he tries to do ends in failure. His recent expulsion from school wasn’t fair, and with his mom missing in action and his dad drunk on the couch, there’s no one to speak up for him. Iggy is tired of being misunderstood, so he devises a plan to make the people at school and at home see that he is a good person. In the days before Christmas, Iggy wanders the city, cold and lost and seeking redemption in unlikely places.

Monster
Walter Dean Myers
This book is written like a screenplay, which is a compelling format for this intense story. Steve Harmon is accused of being an accessory to murder, but he swears that he is innocent. Did he help with a robbery gone wrong, or was he in the wrong place at the wrong time? Learn the facts, weigh the evidence, and decide for yourself as Steve waits for a verdict in the terror of jail.

Sabriel
Garth Nix
Sabriel was born dead. Dragged back into the world of the living by her father, the Abhorsen, the now-teenage Sabriel has learned how to navigate between the realms of life and death. The Abhorsen puts the dead to rest, but what happens when he vanishes and Sabriel must take his place? With friends Touchstone, who may or may not be a prince, and Mogget, who may or may not be a cat, Sabriel sets out to find her father and save him.

Playaways, pics, and other non-alliterative items

20 07 2009

Exciting news: we are getting Playaways in the Teen Room! They’re basically digital audiobooks, so they look kind of like MP3 players and are just as portable. Don’t have headphones? No worries–we’ll be selling earbuds for $1. Keep your eyes peeled for a list of Playaways titles, which I’ll post once we get them in.

In case you missed out, the Harry Potter Party was a blast! Check out the pictures on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/codylibrary

It’s not too late to sign up for our summer reading program. Join the nearly 100 teens already reading and doing activities, and you’ll have a shot at winning one of our many, many prizes :D Here are some books you might want to start with:

Big Mouth and Ugly Girl
Joyce Carol Oates
Matt Donaghy didn’t mean to get into trouble. He was only cracking jokes, but someone overheard him, and that someone didn’t believe that he was kidding when he fake-threatened to shoot up his high school. Now the police have taken him, his friends have turned on him, and his family doesn’t know what or who to believe. Luckily for Matt, Ursula Riggs knows the truth. Will she stand up for him, and will it make a difference?

Gingerbread
Rachel Cohn
Cyd Charisse, aka “The Little Hellion,” hangs out on the beach with gorgeous painter-surfer-boyfriend Shrimp and drinks espresso at Java the Hut, a cafe owned by Shrimp’s equally intriguing brother Wallace. She’s only happy when she’s away from her way-too-snooty rich home, where her younger half-siblings crawl all over her and she and her mother compete in screaming matches. When she’s given a chance to visit her biological father in New York, though, she’s surprised to find out what “family” can mean.

The Astonishing Life Of Octavian Nothing, Traitor To The Nation
M.T. Anderson
This is not your typical “historical fiction” novel. While it takes place during the prelude to the American Revolutionary War, it is an exploration of slavery and betrayal that pulls no punches and feels painfully relevant to the modern world. Octavian is a young boy being raised in what seems to be a school, but why are they collecting so much information about him? Why is his mother not allowed to make any decisions about his upbringing? Find out the chilling truth.

House of the Scorpion
Nancy Farmer
Matteo believes that he is special to El Patron, the crime lord who rules over the country of Opium. Most other people see him as an animal, though, because Matteo is a clone who belongs to El Patron’s family, the House of the Scorpion. When kindly caretakers help Matteo realize the horrible future that has been planned for him, he decides that he must escape. The question is, How?

The Hunger Games
Suzanne Collins
In the country of Panem, which was once North America, the Capitol demands that the poorer Districts send two teenagers per year to compete in the annual Hunger Games. The teens must then fight to the death by any means necessary, and only one is allowed to survive. Hunger Games competitor Katniss takes her younger sister’s place, but is shocked to learn that the other sacrifice from her district is one of her only friends. Will she spare him, or will she save herself?

TAG, you’re it!

12 06 2009

Okay, bad pun, but cool event: we’re having a meeting of the Teen Advisory Group (TAG) on Thursday, June 18th, from 7 til 8pm. It’s fun, it’s free, and you can join anytime. We’ll be planning cool event #2, which is…

The Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Party! Yes, this is going to be as awesome as it sounds. It’ll be in the evening on July 16th, which is the night before the sixth HP movie comes out. We’re going to get psyched up for the movie: we’ll put on some wizard rock albums, play HP Jeopardy, and eat some treats inspired by the Hogwarts dining hall. Costumes are encouraged (’cause hey, they’re fun!), but optional.

Wanna come up with HP Jeopardy questions, suggest snacks, or help in any other way? Come to the TAG meeting! We’d love to hear from you.
